TRAINING

Training at UPRC is generally 3 days a week - Monday, Wednesday & Friday. Water sessions usually take place on Wednesday afternoons or on the weekends, but are dependent on tides and winds etc. Sessions are based at Southsea Rowing Club (for land training) and Portsmouth Water Sport Centre (water sessions).

Southsea Rowing Club

The majority of UPRC land training is done at Southsea Rowing Club. We are fortunate enough to have use of the gym facilities, including squat rack, benches, vairous weights and kettle bells, as well as their ergos and free weight equipment.

Land training will involve a regime of ergos and weights,

often including runs and core circuits.

Competiton between memebers is encouraged.

Training times here are as follows:

Monday: 8 - 10pm (Women only)

Tuesday: 8.30 - 10.30pm (Men only)

Wednesday: 2 - 4pm

Friday: 6 - 8am

Portsmouth Water Sports Centre

UPRC boats are stored and this is where the base of operations is for our water sessions. This is also where a lot of our local training camps take place, utilising the great facilities we have available to us there. Most sessions for beginners and novices will be in bigger boats - fours and eights - to allow for a better development of technique. Whereas the Senior crews will have use of smaller boats - mainly double / pairs - as well as the larger ones.

Training here will generally be on the weekends, early morning or in the afternoon. After Christmas we tend to do an outting for beginners on wednesday afternoons, to allow for more water time.

As the days get longer and we have more light, Intermediate and Senior crews will have the chance to get out on the water in the evenings or early mornings during the week to preapre for regattas etc.

The location allows us to row around the top of the island, which means that we have a stretch of river water and on lower tides we still row on the channel in Langstone Harbour giving us a 3km stretch of water to row on.
